چکیده

In the paper, we present a novel approach for touch modality identification via tactile sensing on a humanoid. In this respect, we equipped a NAO humanoid with whole upper body coverage of multimodal artificial skin. We propose a set of biologically inspired feature descriptors to provide robust and abstract tactile information for use in touch classification. These features are demonstrated to be invariant to location of contact and movement of the humanoid, as well as capable of processing single and multi-touch actions. To provide a comparison of our method, existing approaches were reimplemented and evaluated. The experimental results show that the humanoid can distinguish different single touch modalities with a recognition rate of 96.79% while using the proposed feature descriptors and SVM classifier. Furthermore, it can recognize multiple touch actions with 93.03% recognition rate.

Cross-Modal Sensory Integration of Visual-Tactile Motion Information: Instrument Design and Human Psychophysics

Information obtained from multiple sensory modalities, such as vision and touch, is integrated to yield a holistic percept. As a haptic approach usually involves cross-modal sensory experiences, it is necessary to develop an apparatus that can characterize how a biological system integrates visual-tactile sensory information as well as how a robotic device infers object information emanating fr...

Active Prior Tactile Knowledge Transfer for Learning Tactual Properties of New Objects

Reusing the tactile knowledge of some previously-explored objects (prior objects) helps us to easily recognize the tactual properties of new objects. In this paper, we enable a robotic arm equipped with multi-modal artificial skin, like humans, to actively transfer the prior tactile exploratory action experiences when it learns the detailed physical properties of new objects. These experiences,...

Novel Tactile Descriptors and a Tactile Transfer Learning Technique for Active In-Hand Object Recognition via Texture Properties

This paper proposes robust tactile descriptors and ,for the first time, a novel online tactile transfer learning strategy for discriminating objects through surface texture properties via a robotic hand and an artificial robotic skin. Using the proposed tactile descriptors the robotic hand can extract robust tactile information from generated vibro-tactile signals during in-hand object explorat...

Stretchable capacitive tactile skin on humanoid robot fingers - First experiments and results

A stretchable tactile sensor skin has been demonstrated on the dorsal side of a robotic hand for the first time. The sensors can detect normal pressures on the same scale as human skin but also in excess of 250 kPa and withstand strains in excess of 15%. Using tactile information from the sensors mounted on a glove worn by a humanoid robot’s hand, obstacle detection and surface reconstruction t...

Computational Intelligence Techniques for Tactile Sensing Systems

Tactile sensing helps robots interact with humans and objects effectively in real environments. Piezoelectric polymer sensors provide the functional building blocks of the robotic electronic skin, mainly thanks to their flexibility and suitability for detecting dynamic contact events and for recognizing the touch modality. The paper focuses on the ability of tactile sensing systems to support t...
